![]() ![]() I just wonder whether another course in the area would have been more memorable. We drove quite out of our way to play Old Works. ![]() If you are in the Butte vicinity, give the course a try. My overall conclusion is positive though colored negatively by my poor play. The $100 fee did have a military discount which I appreciated. The clubhouse was unassuming, but the pro shop is well-stocked, and the staff was very cordial. The course condition was good, not great, perhaps a reflection of the place not being busy enough to generate adequate income. The Anaconda Copper Mining Company was acquired by ARCO in 1977. It was surprisingly similar to the sand I am used to. The town sprang up when the giant Anaconda Copper Mining Company of Butte needed a smelter for its vast amounts of copper ore. The most significant characteristic was the bunkers, filled with fine, BLACK sand made of the slag from the smelting process. Numbers 10 and 11 were very challenging and unforgettable. In 1891, Anaconda lost a political battle with Helena to determine which should be the state capital. The Daly Mansion in Hamilton displays the vast wealth and luxurious lifestyle of Marcus Daly. Playing with two friendly locals, I would have been embarrassed to move to the forward Brick tees at 5348 yards. The city of Anaconda, named for the company, sprang up around the smelter and was incorporated in 1887. The course itself offers 5 sets of tees, but since I'm in my upper 70s, the 6132-yard Limestone tees were a bit long for me. In the distance is a 200+ foot smokestack which is the main landmark of the small community. Several large mechanical pieces adorn the property for more interest. The remaining footings do not come into play but are a sober reminder of the hard labor done at the site many years ago. Marcus Daly (Decem November 12, 1900) was an Irish -born American businessman known as one of the three 'Copper Kings' of Butte, Montana, United States. Beginning to show its age as a result of recent neglect, it is nonetheless a very beautiful and impressive edifice. With the construction of a new Catholic Church on the north side of town the church holds irregular masses and is maintained, as much as finances allow, as a historic site. As well, no plaque was to be found at the site. It is not at 714 Alder Street, but at 405 Alder Street, on the corner of Alder Street and East Fourth Street. The National Register has an incorrect address for this church. Still, it remains a beautiful High Victorian Gothic building, with much adornment and embellishment to keep the eye busy while in its presence. It's possible that finances prevent this church's receiving at least a coat of paint and as a result its peeling paint detracts somewhat from its outward appearance. ![]()
